Attic Insulation in North Texas

The attic is one of the most common places for heat to move into and out of a home. Spray foam can be applied to the roofline or to specific areas of the attic, depending on the home and its goals.

Why the attic matters in North Texas

North Texas summers put a lot of demand on a home's cooling system, and the attic is where a large share of that heat enters. During the hottest part of the day, an uninsulated or under-insulated attic can reach temperatures far above the outdoor air temperature, and that heat works its way down into the living space.

Air leakage is a big part of the picture. Gaps around recessed lights, top plates, wiring and plumbing penetrations, and attic access panels allow conditioned air to escape and hot attic air to be drawn in. In many homes, sealing those pathways matters as much as the insulation itself — which is why attic work usually starts with an air-sealing conversation.

North Texas also means mixed seasons. A home has to handle significant cooling demand in summer and cooler, sometimes damp conditions in winter. An attic approach that performs well in one season can behave differently in another, which is why the assembly as a whole — not just the insulation — is what we look at.

Roofline vs. attic floor: two different approaches

There are two broad ways to insulate an attic, and they solve different problems.

Roofline (roof-deck) insulation

Spray foam is applied to the underside of the roof deck and the gable walls, moving the thermal boundary to the roof itself. This brings the attic inside the conditioned envelope, which can be useful when HVAC equipment or ductwork is located up there — equipment sitting in a conditioned space rather than extreme heat. It also generally means the attic is no longer vented to the outdoors in the traditional way, which changes how moisture is managed and must be planned for.

Attic floor insulation

Insulation is placed at the flat ceiling line between the living space and the attic, and the attic remains a vented, unconditioned space. This keeps the existing ventilation strategy intact, which can be simpler in an older home. Its effectiveness depends heavily on how well the ceiling plane is air-sealed and how consistently the insulation covers the area — including around joists and obstacles.

Existing homes vs. new construction

The two situations call for different conversations.

  • Existing homes: the structure is already built, so access matters, existing insulation may need to be worked around or removed, and there may be a history of moisture or ventilation issues to account for. We look at what is already there before proposing changes.
  • New construction: the assembly can be planned from the start, which gives more options for where the thermal boundary sits, how the HVAC is configured, and how the roof is detailed. Decisions made at this stage are harder to change later.

Evaluate the building before changing the attic

Changing how an attic is insulated can change how the whole house behaves. Sealing an attic that was previously vented can alter moisture movement and combustion air paths, and it often changes how the HVAC system needs to operate. That is why we evaluate the assembly first rather than treating attic insulation as a standalone swap.
